Opportunities / Volunteering
Volunteering with The Making is an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the contemporary crafts sector. We frequently require enthusiastic volunteers to support our staff and help make our events a success.

Our volunteers get involved in a wide range of activities. We offer mentoring opportunities with leading artists for those seeking to learn more about a specific medium or public demonstration skills. We also require help with general running of our events. This could include taking bookings, working with participants and help with the set up. The Making will reimburse reasonable travel expenses incurred during your time with us.

Our Volunteer Policy outlines in general terms what to expect if you choose to volunteer with us. You will also be expected to adhere to The Making's Child Protection Policy. Download The Making's Volunteer Policy and Child Protection Policy here:

Don't just take our word for it however...

During April and May 2006, 2nd Yr textiles student Siobhan Lawson, from the University College for the Creative Arts Farnham, undertook a work experience module with The Making, both in the office and as a volunteer assistant on our education and outreach programme;

"Helping at the workshops has taught me how projects like these are structured and delivered. If when I graduate I decide to become a practising designer-maker, I would have some experience in workshop running and could run these as a means for extra income. Working in the office was probably more beneficial as I hadn't done anything like this before. Through speaking to people and generally absorbing the atmosphere and activities taking place, I gained insight into what it might be like to work for an arts organisation. I really enjoyed both aspects of my work experience and it has helped inform my decision of what I plan to do after graduating". Siobhan Lawson
